9/30/23 – Saturday – Up a little late today. Usual Saturday morning routine. Had lunch then gathered things together and down to the church around 2PM to help finish setup for Octoberfest/Pig Roast. The event started at 4PM. I had a break till almost 7 when it was over. Then started working to take things down. Bring tables and chairs inside. Finished up and loaded our stuff in the truck. Home around 8PM. Unloaded things and rested.
Now the specifics:
Well, the annual October fest/Pig roast was this weekend at the church. We make some money but it’s mostly for people to just get together and have a good time. It started many weeks ago. Kathy was gathering things to make a couple items to donate for the silent auction. Early this week she was gathering things to make desserts. Then Friday we started the real hard work. We went down about 3PM and started moving tables and chairs and getting things staged for Saturday when the event actually occurs. The biggest job was putting up the 20 by 30 foot tent. We rent one every year and put if up to give people some shade when they are eating. We don’t have a fellowship hall large enough for everyone. Then Saturday we go back down around 2PM and start setting up tables outside with chairs. The event started at 4PM and ran till 7PM. Then we started taking things down. I was surprised we got out of there by 8PM. But a lot of people stayed and helped. All in all I would say it was a great success.
I spent a couple days this week working on things in the audio booth at church. There was a rather up-to-date desk top computer but it had a bootleg copy of Windows 7 that only worked half the time. So I brought it home and loaded Linux Mint and put Audacity on it. I got a new monitor for it as there wasn’t one with it. Then I took it down and connected the output of the mixing console to it so if they want to record a service they can just fire it up and everything will be ready. I spent most of the day Monday and some time Wednesday and Thursday. But it is all done now. I might have to add one more microphone and the system will be at it’s best.
Kathy did some outside work Tuesday. The typical fall clean up. It was too dry the beginning of the week then it rained two days and then we had things at church. So we didn’t do any mowing. I would expect that it will get done early next week.
Thursday we spent some time getting rid of old tires and paint from the Morton building. The county has an annual tire event where you can take old used tires to the county maintenance yard and drop them off at no cost. The county then rents a machine to grind them up and then sells the used rubber for recycling. They make a good bit of money with that little effort. Usually last 3 days. This year it was Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Gary is doing somewhat better. At least he’s out of bed now when we go see him. He expects to be able to stand in a couple weeks. If that’s true it will be a blessing for everyone involved. As it is now he has to have an aid use the Hoyer lift to get him from the bed into a chair. Then has to have them move him back. So, if he is able to stand he can do that himself. Time will tell.
I have been keeping up with my code practice. It seems like my progress is slowing down. But then again, I’m just about at the point I was when I had to upgrade from Technician to Advanced. I am getting on the air a couple times a week and try to check into the CW Traffic net a couple times a week. It’s just slow going. But I’ll keep up with it.
As always, hope this finds everyone safe and healthy. Stay that way and I’ll blog at you again next week.
