Do not want to do this week again……………………………
As always, first the chronology:
3/25/18 – Sunday – Slept relative well last night given I had to wake up every 3 to 4 hours for pain medication. Kathy got up and went to church and I stayed in bed. Kathy came home and I had a bagel and coffee. Then back to bed. Waited till after lunch and went downstairs and did my blog. Was getting chilled so I came back upstairs and went to bed. Tried to stay warm in bed till 5PM. Got up and shaved and showered. Laid down awhile to recuperate from the work. Then out to the kitchen and had I bite to eat. Back to the bed, some computer work, TV and sleep. Get to see the dental surgeon tomorrow morning. Looking forward to it.
3/26/18 – Monday – Up and out early for my root canal at 8:30. Not a bad experience. Made some stops on the way home. On arrival at home I was quick to get comfortable and get in bed for rest. Don’t remember much about the rest of the day. Anyway, ended up in emergency room that evening.
3/27/18 – Tuesday – Spent most of the day in hospital. Finally left and went home. Got home and went to bed. Not much else.
3/28/18 – Wednesday – Spent most of the day in bed. Went downstairs for a few minutes to pull emails on the computer. Eating more and getting some energy back.
3/29/18 – Thursday – Up and out to see the oral surgeon. He evaluated me and gave me a high level of confidence that he would take charge of the situation. Told me to proceed with some additional things. Wants to see me in a week. Home and finished up tax issues. Had lunch. Kathy went off on errands. Home and had dinner. Met guys on radio at 6:30PM. Did some other chores. Up to bed, computer work, Big Bang and sleep.
3/30/18 – Friday – Up and got cleaned up. Recovery is very slow. Still feel exhausted most of the time. Every time I do much exertion I have to sit and rest awhile. Had lunch and Kathy went off to watch the grand kids. I did some things around the house. Went downstairs and did some work on my audio board. Kathy came home and we had dinner. I went downstairs to do some things. Back upstairs and help Kathy change sheets on our bed. Got in bed, did some computer work. Watched TV and sleep.
3/31/18 – Saturday – Sort of at a stand still. I did get outside today. Eating much better. Got some small tasks done. Otherwise nothing exciting.
Now the specifics:
The week has been a blur to say the least. End of last week I was suffering from a lot of infection in a tooth that should have had a root canal several months ago. But I am a procrastinator and as long as antibiotics took care of things I didn’t see a need to go. Big mistake.
Last Tuesday evening it started bothering me again so I started the antibiotics again and called the oral surgeon Wednesday morning. Got an appointment for Monday. Things progressed until Saturday morning when I woke up to a swelling that looked like I had a golf ball in my mouth. Called my dentist and he advised me to double the antibiotics until I get to the oral surgeon.
Monday morning bright and early we were up and Kathy took me to the oral surgeon. Swelling had subsided somewhat so he did his thing. I remember leaving very pleased and with anticipation that things would now begin to improve much more quickly. We made a couple stops on the way home. I remember getting home getting comfortable and that’s about it.
Apparently the root canal process allowed some of the infection to get into my blood system. I would call it sepsis or septic shock although the subsequent blood tests proved otherwise. In any event, I became disoriented and I’m told I was staggering around the house aimlessly and essentially completely disconnected from reality. Again I don’t recall it but I’m told my daughter came over and she and my wife Kathy got me in the car and up to the emergency room.
They did all kind of tests and kept me overnight. They discharged me the following day with directions to follow-up with the oral surgeon.
It was very frustrating in the hospital since none that I’m aware of are equipped to handle dental emergencies. As a result there was no one that could provide any direction. I did see the oral surgeon, who is a tremendous guy, and he accepted control of my situation.
It’s been an interesting and frustrating recovery. I was slow to be able to start thinking straight again and it’s amazing how little time it takes for muscle atrophy to set in. I am still slow to think about things but am recovering quickly from the physical degradation.
So, that’s been my week. I was amazed by all the thoughts that ran through my head. One main theme kept me on the straight and narrow and that was to simply look around at the many people that have it much worse. That made it much easier to continue my push for normality, whatever that might be. I also thought a lot about death and dying but that is all much too deep for this entry.
Well that’s it for this week. Hope you enjoy my journey. I sure as shit didn’t. Happy Easter to all. Blog at you again next week.
